Summer 2003: Summer vacation: The first outing. The spring rains were constant. By the start of summer the Yuan river was an inch of the city gate. The rains tapered off at the start of summer and then completely stopped for the rest of the summer. The plan was see what it was like traveling around China. You can't see much from a bus or train. When you get to someplace your on foot and at the mercy of travel guides and huge crowds at tourist spots. Unfortunately the roads in central and western Hunan were devastated. It was a mud and road washouts from Hunan into Chongqing. Chongquing was even worse as it's mostly mountains and poor roads to start with. That year hundreds of mudslides occurred making travel by anything other than foot, bicycle or motoche almost impossible.
