Mongolian low plain:

The low and high plains are vast and have many features.  The low plain in eastern Mongolia has low mountains, hills, but lots of flats places. From a distance the area seems green and lush but close up the grass is sparse so not a thick mat of growth.

The grasslands expand with the rains and recede with drought.

Some areas are irrigated but not many.  In the drier places only grass so grazing land.

Route 303 runs from Tongliao to Xilinhot and runs through very beautiful country.

Surprisingly some areas fenced off for kilometers with branch posts and barbed wire.

Some of the lower plain has been irrigated and can support vast acreages of corn.  Most of the low plain is dependant on rainfall.  The crop of choice is corn.  There's a corn belt running from northern Henan through Hebei and Monggu.  It probably extends into Heilongjiang.

Hard to distinguish in the photo's below is a sea of corn running to the hills which are all grass.

The next 6 photo's are a panorama from the back of the small town of Balinyouqi.  They built a berm of sand to protect the town from wind and sand in drier years.  This year things are fairly green and very beautiful.  The locals come down to the berms in summer to relax and catch a cooling breeze.

Much of the area between the low and high plain looks like this, patches of exposed sand from lack of rain.

Not irrigated but enough rainfall in the good years to sustain a crop of corn.

From a distance the mountains seem green but close up a bit scragly.

Not distinguishable is that this is all a large cornfield as far as you can see.
