Chinese traditional Siheyuan Compound homes:

The general style of home in China was a compound of small buildings.  The compound housed the extended families of the matriarch.  The classic compound had a single central open area where most daily household activities took place or was a garden.  More complex compounds have multiple areas.  This home was in the city and the picture taken from my hotel room.
