House Types:

The original colonial period houses were very small with one to two rooms.  They were constructed from wood which was very rough and cut to shape with hand axes.

Later as the east coast gets more populated and organized there are saw mills available for cutting trees into boards for house building.  The red house was build around 1750.  There is a house section added on the back and a recent addition to the right for a car called a garage.   The front is the formal entrance to the house but seldom used.  The daily entrance is to the side between the garage and house.   Note the house has a chimney for a fireplace.  Originally all cooking and heating was done at this fireplace.  Today the fireplace would not be used much other than for occasional heat or to have a romantic atmosphere.   The house has been updated for cooking with electricity so has a 4 burner stove.  There is now town provided with water and sewer running on most streets so this house gets water from those.   The water and sewer lines are buried under the street so pipes are run from the house to the main lines in the street.

Older colonial house.  This house was originally built for a single large family.  By large single family that would be parents and several children, no aunts or uncles.  Note the two chimneys which privided heat on the first and second floors with direct openings in which would could be burned.  Cooking would be done on a cast iron stove with heat from burning wood.

Another colonial period home from approximately 1790.

Most houses from this period had attachments to the main house.  The attachments were for various uses.  In the early time they could be for crop storage and animals.

Another colonial period home, old and needs some paint.

Colonial home about 100 to 150 years old.  Attachments run from the main house to the big barn to the left.  The original house was the part on the right. First the house and barn were probably built and the other sections added later.

Fairly old colonial period house from about 1770.  The section on the right was the original and the left two sections added later.  The last left section was converted to a garage for a parking a car.

Older house, about 100 years old.  These houses have a clean look because of the outside covering of vinal which is like plastic called siding.  The siding and yellow trim make the house look new.

Older house with the chimneys removed and vinal siding installed.  It's about 100 years old.

House style from the 1950's and 60's.  These houses start simple with just the main house.  Over time the owners build additions as the family grows.

This house had the roof changed to make more room in the upstairs bedrooms.

Basic house style called a "Ranch".

Simple ranch with later additions.  The house has a garage a nad another entrance door added which leads into the kitchen.  The section on the left is for tool storage like a lawnmower or snow remover, garden tools and anything else that does not get used much.

Ranch with addition to the left, probably a bedroom.  This house has two levels.  The cellar is underground and finished into a living area.

Modern single family home.

The tendency in the Marlborough/Hudson area is to build large expensive homes.

Very desirable is to buy land out of the main area of the town or city in the country with enough room to build the house away from the road for privacy.
